Saxophone quartet, movements I & II
duration: 12 minutes
premiere: MAAT Saxophone Quartet at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, June 2021
The first movement, subtitled "There was no-one but Time passing by", expresses a state of loneliness and abandon. There is not a living soul around, only the flow of time breezes among us, captured in the unchanging ostinato pedal of the baritone and tenor saxophones. The upper parts are bound in a yearning, melancholic song. Yet also time seems to have stopped, as the instruments fade towards the end.
Second movement, "...on chasing the groove" is based on a five-bar motive that travels through all four instrument parts, then, subtracted and used as a changing motive pattern that phases in and out different rythmic variations.
